2015 Review and Newsletter
Once again it has been a great year; the standard at the club continues to remain high resulting in a high quality of grading. We have a great fighting squad with the new kids on the block already starting to shine.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of the TKA instructors who dedicate their time to TKA and always go above and beyond the call of duty. This doesn’t go unnoticed and is much appreciated! Many thanks also to all of the parents who support their kids throughout the year with their training, grading and of course the time-consuming competitions.
We have a fantastic bond at TKA which results in a great atmosphere for parents and children alike. Long may it continue!
All memberships are due to be renewed in January 2016 at a cost of £25. Without it students will not be able to train.
Fees haven’t been increased for two years and an increase will be effective 1st January 2016. All details and the new standing order forms will be available at the gym in January. Please complete these and hand to reception to avoid any unnecessary delays.
There will be a choice of two payments dates either 1st or 28th of each month.
A list of tournament dates for 2016 will be available at reception in January. Please note that we are going to prioritise some of the tournaments in order for a full squad to be present.
Some changes have been made to the timetable to accommodate our new Boxing Classes.
Boxing is currently proving to be very popular with our students and as such it is necessary and of course in the interest of our own club that we apply a framework that is fair and reasonable to all.
For those of you who want to box ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) competitively need to understand that you cannot compete in other combat sports. There is also a fight matrix detailed below:
Mat fighting – Equivalent to ABA Boxing
1 points fight – ½ boxing bout
There are other ways to box competitively with BBU (British Boxing Union) but the above restrictions do not apply. At TKA we are happy to accommodate both and therefore expect anyone who boxes at our club and wants to box ABA/BBU need to be carded through ‘West Warwick ABC’ under the TKA umbrella to avoid a potential conflict of interest.
We are looking forward to an exciting New Year and we already have Josh Hamilton boxing in the Championships in February.
As you know private lessons are always in high demand. If in the unfortunate event you need to cancel then please ensure that 24 hours’ notice is received, if not the lesson will still need to be paid for in full.
Thoughts from Ellis Blake
I would like to thank everyone who has had a private lesson with me and trained throughout the year.
We now have a great boxing ring and have started our own boxing club; it’s only natural that people will want to try it out. Speaking from experience I can only advise you to think about your own fight progression. By the time I decided to try boxing I was 17 years old. I’d been competing at the highest level on the kickboxing circuit for seven years. I’d won the Irish Open points fighting on the mats, I won the British WAKO four years on the bounce and I was also British and European full contact champion.
Kickboxing is my background and this is where I learnt to fight, I did all three disciplines at the same time. You fight more often and get a lot of fighting experience on the way. If I could give any of you any advice it would be to make sure you don’t think you are too good for points or continuous fighting and please don’t underestimate the benefit that it can bring you.
For information I’ve been boxing now for two years and I’ve been given 5 boxing bouts, if this was kickboxing I would have had 300 plus fights.
Anyway, enough of the lecture J I hope you all have a good Christmas and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at the party on Saturday.
We have one of the best fight teams in country and we want to keep up the hard training that goes into that. As you know other fighters and clubs come to TKA to train, some on a reguar basis others come from time to time, I also send our guys to spar and train at other places when I think they need to mix up their training. However, you can only fight for Team TKA. Sometimes fighters get asked to be on a fight team like the WARRIORS at ‘Clash of the Titans’ as a one off event and there is no problem with this, I just want to keep the team spirit together.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Party/Awards Night on Saturday 19th December. Let’s have a great night of music, dancing, eating, drinking and most importantly some fighting!
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
