Tamworth Kickboxing Academy have had a superb 2014 , it started off in great style with some great results at the Kwon Grand Slam and Watford Open in January.
That was quickly followed by superb results in both the British WAKO championships in February and then the IRISH OPEN in March. TKA finished in 5th position in the overall medal table, an amazing achievement for a club team as most medal winning teams are national associations.
TKA has had great end to the year also, with fantastic results at the Bristol Open in October especially from some of the newer, younger fighters, who put in some great performances.
TKA also achieved impressive results at the ISKA championships in November, followed by the WKU World championship qualifiers for next year in Spain. Nearly all our fighters qualified, so that’s an exciting time to look forward to.
Impressive individual performances include Finlay Ballantyne who won 4 irish open titles, Jack ‘bruiser’ Dilloway winning the WKU World championship and Josh Hamilton taking on Oliver Sykes the WKU world champion. Although he was the underdog, Josh took the fight to Sykes and carried out his game plan to the letter to successfully take the title from Sykes.
Josh Hamilton was crowned world champion, head coach Lance Manyer made a return to the mats as he took on Welsh champion Lee Martin for the WOMAA British title, the fight was over 3, 2 minute rounds , this was the first time many of Lances young students had seen him in action and he didn’t disapoint. He dominated the fight from the first round and was crowned the British champion.
Tori Willetts had a great year in the square ring winning many titles this year and also getting ‘revenge’ over Toyha Chapman to take the ISKA British title. Ellis Blake also had a superb year in the square ring regaining his ICO European title in war against Romaine Porter, he also beat Anthony Edwards to win the WKU British title in a master class of a performance.
Lewis Brown was in superb form this year, being double British WAKO champion, Irish open bronze medalist, with injury kept him out of the final. He was also the Bristol Open champion and has just returned from Italy with Team KWON UK as the team champions and also as the Italian Open champion.
The club has just had its end of year gradings with everybody putting great effort and showing why the standards at TKA are so high, it was an excellent grading.
We also saw 2 new black belts for Bindy Westwood and Dan Watts and Josh Golding and Dan Cobb achieving brown belts. They were put through a gruelling 4 and half hour test of their fitness, technical skill, fighting ability and also self-defence skills, for the sparring element they had to fight the TKA’s seasoned black belts, non stop for an hour. It was a gruelling test of their determination and resolve but they came out the other side in one piece deserving and prowd of their new belts.
